Ski & Mountain Tourism
Although Turkey is best known for its hot Mediterranean seaside resorts, for different swimming activities, sun bathing and various water sports, there is much more Turkey can offer to its visitors. The high altitude mountains of Turkey have made the country an important centre for winter tourism and activities such as hiking and mountaineering. Gradually, skiing is becoming increasingly popular.
A large part of Turkey is mountainous and for this reason many regions of Turkey have cooler climate than the resort regions. With an average altitude of 1000 meters, the Anatolian Peninsula is covered to the north with North Anatolian Mountains whose height varies between 2587 and 3932 m, and the Taurus Mountains to the south with height from 3086 to 4136 m. With many mountain peaks experiencing snow cover for as much as six months a year, the opportunity for skiing here is great.
